On Any Given Tuesday...Any Team Can Lose; Especially at the Buzzer!

On Tuesday night at Infinity Gym the ASA Manhattan Mad Titans suffered a heart breaking loss to the ASA Brooklyn Avengers JV.  With under a second remaining, freshman guard, David Cexil, made an elbow extended jump shot that secured the victory for ASA Brooklyn.  He was awarded the point after for scoring the touchdown as time expired to lead his team to a 73-70 victory.  Cexil's 8 of his 11 points came in the second half with under 4 minutes remaining as he willed his team to victory.

The game started with ASA Manhattan seeking to recover from losing a close game to the Nationally Ranked Hostos Caimans 48 hours earlier.  ASA Brooklyn, had other plans, and came out ready to stifle any carry over momentum as they opened up the game by keeping it close at 7-6 and then taking a 14 point lead midway thru the first half.  The Mad Titans regrouped and cut the lead to 7 at the half with the score being 35-28.

The second stanza began with an amazing run by the Mad Titans as they outscored the Avengers by 15 points to take a 49-41 lead with under ten minutes to go with tremendous defensive pressure and offensive efficiency. The Avengers came right back with 8 consecutive points to tie the game at 49-49 to set up the wild finish.  With under 1 minute to go and the Avengers up by 4 points, Justin Wilson, converted a basket off of a missed shot.  Then a missed free throw by the Avengers allowed Salim Fofana to tie the game up at 70 with a driving lay up.  Yet, with 16.8 to go and the Avengers ball, David Cexil made a great 15 ft jump shot with 0.4 seconds left to seal the win.

Yet, much like agaisnt Hostos, the Mad Titans missed an abundance of free throws (10 tonight) which could have helped them in the closing moments.

Salim Fofana finished with 20 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals.  Justin Wilson had 16 points and 11 rebounds.  Joseph Hicks had 14 points which came all in the second half.

For the Avengers; Cexil finished with 11 points, Kimani McIntosh had 19 points, and Quan Van Putten had 13 points.

Up next for the Mad Titans is a Thursday night affair on December 6th when they face the Warriors of Vaughn College at 6pm at Infinity Gym.
